2021-06-11 SEA Games Federation votes against postponement of 2021 SEA Games

According to Olympic Council of Malaysi, the South East Asian (SEA) Games Federation office held a special meeting on Wednesday, June 9 to discuss the views of its members in relation to the proposed postponement of the 31st SEA Games 2021 to July 2022.

Due to the increasing number of Covid-19 cases in the region, it is the wish of the Organising Committee of Vietnam to host the 31st edition of the SEA Games in a safe and secure manner.

A majority of eight out of 11 SEA Games Federation member countries objected to the proposed postponement of the SEA Games due to the busy sports schedule next year, including the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China in September 2022. Additionally, many of the countries are already in the midst of preparations for this year’s SEA Games.

The SEA Games Federation office will work closely with the organising committee of Vietnam in the next two weeks for a solution to be tabled to the SEA Games Federation Council for endorsement.

The 31st SEA Games are due to be held in Hanoi and 11 neighbouring cities and provinces from November 21 to December 2, 2021 with 40 sports and 526 events. A total of 10,000 athletes and officials from the 11 National Olympic Committees in the SEA region are expected to attend.

Asian Kickboxing Confederation after many years efforts had successfully included Kickboxing as official sport in 30th SEA Games 2019 Philippines and its successful organisation led in inclusion of Kickboxing in 31st SEA Games Vietnam 2021.

Mr. Nasser Nassiri, President of Asian Kickboxing Confederation declared: Asian Confederation had applied for inclusion of Kickboxing in SAE Games back in 2015 and finally many years efforts led in inclusion of Kickboxing as official sport representing 8 events at the 30th SAE Games 2019 Philippinnes.

President Nassiri added : After successful organization of Kickboxing competition at the 30th SEA Games 2019 Philippines, and the nonstop efforts of Asian Confederation, we are now present at 31st SEA Games with 12 events.

The 32nd SEA Games will be hosted by Cambodia in 2023.
