2022-05-16 Kickboxing a ‘great success’ at SEA Games in Vietnam

Hanoi, Vietnam, May 16, 2022: The Asian Kickboxing Confederation declared the kickboxing competition at the 31st Southeast Asian Games a “great success”, fulfilling the SEA Games slogan “For a Stronger Southeast Asia”.

The Asian Confederation, the Asian governing body of kickboxing conducted the competition, which started on May 6 with the weigh-in and medical check followed by the competition from May 8-13.

Eight of the 11 National Olympic Committees in the SEA region took part – Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam – in two ring styles: full contact and low kick, with 12 medal events.

Vietnam dominated the ring styles and won five gold medals and six bronze, followed by Thailand (2-4-6), Philippines (2-4-2), Indonesia (2-1-1), Cambodia (1-3-1), Malaysia (0-0-5) and Laos (0-0-2).

The 12 gold medal-winners were subject to anti-doping tests by WADA in coordination with the Vietnam SEA Games Organising Committee.

Mr. Nasser Nassiri, President of the Asian Kickboxing Confederation, said: “The ability of the Asian Kickboxing Confederation to organise such a wonderful and prestigious competition has been demonstrated once again.

“Since the Asian Kickboxing Confederation was recognised as the body in charge of kickboxing in Asia by a decision of the 50th OCA Executive Board meeting on May 28, 2007, we are technically in charge of all kickboxing competitions in Asia, including the Asian Indoor and Martial Arts Games and SEA Games.

“Our sport has been developed and has grown significantly in Asia and internationally, and the member associations have been given the necessary support by their National Olympic Committees.

“On behalf of the executives of the Asian Kickboxing Confederation and all of our members, I would like to express my sincere thanks to the Olympic Council of Asia for their efforts in developing all sports in general and kickboxing in particular throughout the Asian continent.”

The Technical Delegate of the kickboxing competition in Hanoi, Euncheon Jeong, added: “The kickboxing competition was a wonderful event and all participating NOCs appreciated the competition and the hard work of our officials.

“I would like to thank all participating NOCs, referees/judges and officials and all National Technical Officials who officiated during the competition.”
